Technology

The private line, explained.

ClearSky™ is the peer-to-peer, end-to-end encrypted transfer technology inside OneSpace. It moves files straight from your device to theirs: no cloud middleman, no server in the path. This page walks through exactly what happens when you press send, and why we couldn’t read your files if we wanted to.

End-to-end encrypted, always Zero files stored in any cloud No server in the path
Two routes compared A file travels directly from your device to theirs over an encrypted line; the cloud-server route is dimmed — a copy would have stayed on that server. No copy is stored anywhere on the direct line.
Zero-knowledge

What we never see.

Most services ask you to trust their policy. ClearSky is built so you don’t have to trust anyone, including us.

Not your files

0 files stored on our servers. Ever. Your files never touch them, so there’s no readable copy sitting anywhere to breach, subpoena, or leak.

Not your keys

Encryption keys are created on your devices and never leave them. We couldn’t read your files if we wanted to. We built it that way on purpose.

Nothing to hand over

No server in the path and no keys on our side means there is nothing anyone can take from us, or ask us for. Not a policy promise. A mathematical one.

How a transfer works

Five steps. Two devices. No third place.

01 · PAIR

You add each other

You and your recipient add one another as contacts, by username. Being each other’s contact creates a private connection between your devices, and your devices exchange public keys. Strangers can’t send you anything.

02 · HANDSHAKE

Keys agreed, device to device

Over that private connection, your devices agree the session keys for the transfer: peer to peer, between the two of them. No key server, no copy on our side.

03 · ENCRYPT

Sealed on your device

Before a file goes anywhere, ClearSky encrypts it with AES-256, on the device itself. Nothing readable ever leaves your device.

04 · TRANSFER

A direct, encrypted channel

The file travels on a direct line between your device and theirs. No cloud stop, no relay copy: nothing is uploaded, cached, or “temporarily stored” along the way. Not on our servers, not on anyone’s.

05 · DECRYPT

Opened on theirs. Only theirs.

The receiving device decrypts the file on arrival, and the session key is destroyed. Your file now exists in exactly two places: your device and theirs. That’s the whole trip.

Your devices are the network. There is no third place.

Step 04, live

This is what a direct line looks like.

A real transfer running in the app: device to device on the map, no stop in between. What you see here is step 04 happening: the file is already encrypted, the line is already private, and no server will ever hold a copy.

Under the hood

Encryption, specifically.

Every transfer is protected with AES-256, end to end. The file is encrypted on your device before it moves, stays encrypted for the whole trip on the direct channel, and is decrypted only on the receiving device.

Keys are generated on your devices and kept on your devices. When you pair with a contact, your devices exchange public keys; the session keys for each transfer are agreed device-to-device. When a transfer is delivered, the session key is destroyed.

And there’s nothing for you to configure: no hassle with PGP keys or your own key infrastructure. OneSpace is ready to use straight out of the box, on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android.

No small print

The honest part.

A private line has properties a cloud locker doesn’t. We’d rather you know them before you buy.

Both devices need to be online

A ClearSky transfer is a live, direct line. That’s the point. If your recipient isn’t on yet, they get a notification that you’re trying to send, so the line comes up quickly.

We retry, or you decide not to wait

If a direct line can’t be established yet, ClearSky keeps retrying until it can. Don’t want to wait? You can choose to send via our broker instead: the file is encrypted on your device first, handed over, and deleted the moment your recipient downloads it. We couldn’t read it in between: we never have the keys.

The web demo works differently

The free web demo encrypts in your browser, hands the file over through our broker, and wipes it within 24 hours. It’s a taste of OneSpace. The full product goes straight device-to-device, no middleman at all.

The track record

Not our first encryption product.

ClearSky™ comes from the team that built the encryption software shipped with storage products from the world’s leading brands, protecting files at retail scale, long before OneSpace.

That work reached over 150,000 customers and protected hundreds of millions of secure deliveries. Quietly, reliably, for more than a decade.

OneSpace, powered by ClearSky, is what we built next. ClearSky launched in the United States in 2024.

OneSpace allows for peer-to-peer file transfers without the need for third-party cloud storage or third-party servers. This gives users peace of mind, knowing their files remain secure and private, under their own control.

Questions

Straight answers.

How is this different from cloud services that offer end-to-end encryption?

Encryption is only half the story. The other half is where your file lives. A cloud service, encrypted or not, still holds a copy of your file on its servers. ClearSky removes the server entirely: the file travels straight from your device to theirs, so there is no copy anywhere to breach, subpoena, or leak.

What can OneSpace see when I send a file?

Not the file. It’s encrypted on your device with keys that never leave your devices, and it travels a direct line to the recipient, never through our servers. We store 0 files and hold no keys, so we couldn’t read your files if we wanted to.

Do both devices need to be online at the same time?

Yes. A ClearSky transfer is a live, direct line between two devices, and that direct line is the whole point. Your recipient gets a notification when you start a transfer, so they know to come online. If you just need to hand someone a file from a browser, the free web demo covers that.

What happens when a direct connection can’t be made?

ClearSky retries until the direct line is there, and your recipient gets a notification, so it usually comes up quickly. If you’d rather not wait, you can choose to send via our broker: the file is encrypted on your device before it leaves, and deleted as soon as your recipient downloads it. Either way, we never hold the keys, so we can never read it.

Do I need to set up PGP keys or certificates?

No. When you add a contact, your devices exchange public keys automatically, and session keys are agreed device-to-device for every transfer. There’s no PGP hassle and no key infrastructure of your own to run. OneSpace is ready to use straight out of the box.

Is the free web demo the same as ClearSky?

No, and we’re upfront about that. The web demo encrypts a file in your browser, hands it over through our broker, and wipes it within 24 hours. It’s a taste of OneSpace. The full product goes further: straight device-to-device, no middleman at all.
